The Domestic Flight: Fast and Spectacular
Flying from Belize City to San Pedro is the quickest way to reach the island and one of the most enjoyable short flights in the Caribbean. The two airlines serving the route are Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, both operating small Cessna aircraft that seat around 12 passengers.
Flights depart from two airports in Belize City. Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), where your international flight arrives, offers direct connections to San Pedro for $135 to $150 USD one way. Alternatively, a short taxi ride takes you to Belize City Municipal Airport, where the same journey costs $87 to $98 USD. Both options have flights departing roughly every hour between 7am and 5pm.
The flight takes just 15 to 20 minutes and the aerial views of the Belize Barrier Reef on approach to San Pedro are genuinely extraordinary. If you are travelling with a family or a group, the flight is often the most practical option. Note that a domestic departure tax of $7.50 USD applies to all flights departing San Pedro on your return journey.
Flight tip
Book your domestic flight at least 90 minutes after your scheduled international arrival to allow time for immigration, customs and baggage collection. If your international flight is delayed and you miss your booked domestic flight, both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air are experienced at accommodating passengers on the next available departure at no extra charge.
The Water Taxi: Scenic and Affordable
The water taxi is the classic Belizean way to reach San Pedro and offers a very different kind of arrival experience. Two operators run the crossing from Belize City: San Pedro Belize Express and Caribbean Sprinter, with a combined total of up to 14 daily departures from the Marine Terminal in downtown Belize City. The first boat departs at approximately 8am and the last at around 5:30pm.
To reach the Marine Terminal from the international airport, you will need a taxi, which costs a fixed $25 USD and takes around 25 minutes depending on traffic. At the terminal, tickets are purchased at the counter for around $32.50 USD one way. The crossing to San Pedro takes approximately 90 minutes, with a brief stop at Caye Caulker along the way.
On a calm, sunny day the water taxi crossing is a wonderful experience — warm breezes, open water and the first glimpse of the Caribbean turning from green to turquoise as you approach the island. On rougher days the crossing can be bumpy and wet, particularly towards the bow of the boat. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit towards the back and take precautions before boarding.
Cost Comparison
| Option | Journey time | Approx. cost per person (one way) |

Which Option Is Right for You?
Choose the flight if:
You are arriving late in the day, since the last water taxi departs around 5:30pm and there is no water taxi service after dark. The flight is also the better option for anyone with limited time, those travelling with young children or older travellers who want the easiest possible journey. Solo travellers and couples where budget is less of a concern will also find the flight the most convenient choice.
Choose the water taxi if:
You are travelling on a budget, particularly with a large group where the savings per person add up quickly. The water taxi is also a wonderful option for anyone who wants to experience the crossing as part of the adventure, or who would like to stop at Caye Caulker either on the way or on a future day trip. If you arrive in Belize City with plenty of time before the last departure, the water taxi is a very enjoyable way to make the journey.
Our recommendation
For most first-time visitors, the flight from Philip Goldson International is the most straightforward option. It eliminates the taxi transfer to the marine terminal, fits easily into a typical arrival schedule and delivers you to the island in under 20 minutes with a view you will not forget. For budget-conscious travellers or larger groups, the water taxi is an excellent and perfectly comfortable choice if you arrive early enough in the day.
