A First Timer's Guide to Snorkeling in Belize

What to expect, what you will see and how to prepare for one of the most unforgettable experiences the Caribbean has to offer.

Snorkeling in Belize is one of those experiences that changes your perspective on the natural world. The Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, stretches 185 miles along the coast and sits just half a mile from our beachfront at SunBreeze Suites. For first-time snorkelers, it is the perfect introduction to the underwater world.

If you have never snorkeled before, or have tried it once and found it awkward, Belize is the ideal place to get it right. The water behind the reef is warm, calm and clear, the marine life is abundant and the guided tours from San Pedro are run by experienced, patient local experts who are used to working with complete beginners. Here is everything you need to know before you get in the water.

Why Belize Is Perfect for First-Time Snorkelers

The conditions at the key snorkeling sites near San Pedro are genuinely ideal for beginners. The water inside the Belize Barrier Reef is protected from open ocean swells, which means it stays calm even when conditions elsewhere are less settled. Water visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres on a clear day, meaning you can see the coral formations and marine life below you with extraordinary clarity even from the surface.

The reef itself is remarkably close to shore. From SunBreeze Suites, the barrier reef is less than a mile offshore, so boat transfers to the best sites take only 10 to 20 minutes. Most snorkel tours operate in water that is between 3 and 8 metres deep, shallow enough to feel safe and deep enough to encounter an extraordinary variety of marine life.

The Best Snorkel Sites Near San Pedro

  • Snorkelers exploring Hol Chan Marine Reserve near San Pedro Belize with nurse sharks stingrays and tropical fish
    Best overall site

    Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan means "little channel" in Mayan and refers to a natural break in the reef through which warm water flows, creating an extraordinary concentration of marine life. This is the most popular snorkel site in Belize and for good reason. Nurse sharks rest on the sandy bottom, large green sea turtles cruise past and enormous schools of tropical fish surround you in all directions. The site is protected, visibility is consistently excellent and it is very well suited to beginners. A licensed guide is required and our snorkel tours include Hol Chan as a standard stop.

  • Shark Ray Alley snorkel site near San Pedro Belize with nurse sharks and southern stingrays in shallow crystal clear water
    Most thrilling

    Shark Ray Alley

Almost always visited on the same trip as Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley is where nurse sharks and southern stingrays gather in remarkable numbers in shallow, crystal-clear water. You can snorkel among them in water shallow enough to stand in. The nurse sharks are completely docile and the experience of being surrounded by them is simultaneously peaceful and exhilarating. For first-time snorkelers, this is the moment that defines the whole trip. Guides are on hand at all times and will help anyone who needs a hand in the water.

  • Mexico Rocks snorkel site near San Pedro Belize with calm shallow lagoon water perfect for beginner snorkelers
    Best for beginners

    Mexico Rocks

Located in the calm, protected lagoon north of San Pedro, Mexico Rocks is a patch reef with wonderfully shallow conditions and beautiful coral formations. Because it sits inside the lagoon rather than on the open reef, conditions here are almost always perfect regardless of weather. It is an ideal first snorkel experience and a wonderful option for anyone who prefers calmer, shallower water. The diversity of coral and fish life is remarkable given the depth and accessibility of the site.

How to Prepare for Your First Snorkel

Practise breathing through the tube first

The most common challenge for first-time snorkelers is getting comfortable breathing through the mouthpiece with your face in the water. Before you go on your tour, spend five minutes in the hotel pool practising. Float face-down, breathe slowly and steadily through the tube and simply get used to the sensation. By the time you reach the reef, it will feel natural.

Choose a life vest if you want one

All reputable snorkel operators in Belize provide life vests and there is absolutely no reason not to use one, regardless of how confident a swimmer you are. A life vest takes the effort out of staying afloat and lets you focus entirely on what is happening beneath the surface. Our guides routinely recommend them to first-timers and will fit one for you before the boat leaves.

Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard

Standard sunscreen is banned in Belize's marine protected areas because it contains chemicals that damage coral. Before your trip, purchase a reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen and check the label carefully. A UV-protective rash guard is even better, covering your back and shoulders while keeping the reef healthy. Most tour operators will remind you of this requirement at briefing, but it is best to come prepared.

Do not touch anything

This is the single most important rule on the reef. Coral looks solid but is actually a living organism and even a light touch can kill a section that took decades to grow. Maintain a comfortable distance from the coral, do not stand on the reef and avoid chasing or touching any marine life. Your guide will brief you on this before you get in the water.

First-timer tip

The best snorkeling conditions in Belize are generally in the morning when winds are lighter and visibility is at its clearest. Book a morning tour where possible and you will almost always be rewarded with the most spectacular conditions of the day.

What Will You See?

The marine life at the snorkel sites near San Pedro is genuinely extraordinary. On a typical tour to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, first-time snorkelers regularly encounter nurse sharks, southern stingrays, green sea turtles, eagle rays, moray eels, barracuda, lobster and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish including parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and snapper. The coral formations include vast brain corals, towering elkhorn corals and delicate sea fans. It is an underwater world that most people have only seen in documentaries, and experiencing it in person is something very few visitors forget.

"People who have never snorkeled before arrive on the boat a little nervous and come back completely transformed. The reef does that to people every single time."
