May in Belize is one of the best kept secrets on the Caribbean calendar. Calm seas, warm sunshine, fresh seafood and some of the best travel deals of the year. There is no better time to discover Ambergris Caye.
The peak season crowds have eased, the island is at its most relaxed and the Caribbean Sea remains calm, clear and warm. At SunBreeze Suites, May is one of our favourite months to welcome guests. Everything Belize is known for is still here in full, with a little more breathing room to enjoy it properly.
May Weather on Ambergris Caye
May is consistently one of the warmest months of the year on Ambergris Caye. Average high temperatures reach 31°C (87.8°F), with rainfall spread across around 7 days of the month — meaning the majority of days are sunny and ideal for time on the water. March through May are the months with the most sunshine in Belize, averaging 8 hours of sun per day, and the Caribbean coast benefits from consistent sea breezes that keep the heat comfortable throughout the day.
When rain does arrive, it typically comes as a short afternoon shower rather than an all-day downpour. Mornings are almost always clear and perfect for reef activities. The sea remains calm and protected behind the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, and water visibility is excellent for snorkeling and diving throughout the month.
One important note for sun lovers: the UV index in May reaches 12, which represents an extreme level of UV radiation from unprotected exposure. Reef-safe sunscreen, UV-protective rash guards and a wide-brim hat are essential items to pack for any trip this month.
Local tip
The first two weeks of May tend to offer the most settled weather and the lightest crowds before the early green season picks up. Book during this window for the best combination of conditions and value. See our current specials before you book.

May Festivals and Events in Belize
May is also a month of culture and celebration in Belize, and visiting during this period gives you a richer and more authentic experience of the country.
The Chocolate Festival of Belize takes place in the Toledo District over the Commonwealth Day Holiday weekend in late May. This three-day celebration honours the Toledo District's cacao heritage with local delicacies, live music and cultural displays, and is one of the most distinctive events on the Belizean calendar. A day trip from Ambergris Caye is very much worth the journey.
The Cashew Festival in Crooked Tree Village in early May celebrates the cashew harvest with traditional foods, cashew wine, live music and community gatherings. Both events offer a genuine window into Belizean culture and are well worth building into your trip if timing allows.
Mother's Day is celebrated with great warmth across Belize in May, and at SunBreeze Suites we have created a special package to mark the occasion — details below.
"The island is quieter, the reef is in excellent condition and the fresh seafood is as good as it gets. May is one of the smartest months to plan a Belize trip."

Practical Tips for Visiting Belize in May
Getting to San Pedro
Fly into Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City, then connect to San Pedro via a 15-minute domestic flight with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, or take the scenic 90-minute water taxi across the Caribbean. May international flights from North America tend to be more affordable than peak season, which adds further to the overall value of the month. Our getting here guide has everything you need.
What to pack for May
Light, breathable clothing covers every occasion on the island. A compact rain jacket is useful for the occasional afternoon shower, and a light layer is handy for air-conditioned restaurants in the evening. Reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen is both essential and required in Belize's protected marine areas. Given the UV index reaches 12 in May, UV-protective rash guards are strongly recommended for any time spent on the water. Comfortable walking sandals work for everything from beach to town.
Seafood in May
Fresh seafood is one of the great pleasures of any visit to San Pedro and May is a particularly good month for it. Snapper, barracuda, conch and grouper are all abundant, and our restaurant Jambel's Jerk Pit prepares the day's catch with a wonderful blend of Belizean and Jamaican flavours. Lobster season reopens on July 1, so those planning a late June or July visit have that to look forward to as well.
