San Pedro Lobster Festival 2026: Eleven Days on the Island

July 1 marks the opening of lobster season in Belize, and in San Pedro, that date has always meant something. The San Pedro Lobster Festival — now in its 19th year — is the island's biggest food and community event, running from July 1 to 11 with a different restaurant or bar hosting each day and night of the crawl, and ending with a block party at the Hon. Louis Sylvestre Sports Complex on July 11.

SunBreeze Suites sits on Barrier Reef Drive in the heart of San Pedro Town. Most of the crawl venues are within walking distance. There are no shuttles to arrange, no taxis to flag. Walk out, join the crawl, and come back when you are ready.

How the Crawl Works

The festival is built around a passport crawl. Each day from July 1 to 11, participating venues host their own lobster event — some as day events, some as night events, some as both. Pick up a festival passport at the start and collect stamps at each venue you visit. At the Block Party on July 11, passport holders enter the Grand Prize Raffle.

The format suits both planners and those who prefer to improvise. Pick a few venues in advance, or follow the energy on the day. Either way, there is fresh lobster and cold Belikins at every stop.

What to Eat

Belize harvests Caribbean spiny lobster — no claws, with the meat concentrated in the tail. It is sweeter and firmer than the cold-water varieties most North Americans are used to, and San Pedro restaurants handle it well. During festival week you will find it grilled with garlic butter, in ceviche with habanero and lime, curried and served with rice and beans, in kebab form at beach bars, and as lobster pasta or risotto at the higher-end spots. If a menu shows lobster soup, order it.

For a proper sit-down dinner, Blue Water Grill, Elvi's Kitchen, and Rain Restaurant and Rooftop are all worth booking in advance during their respective festival nights. For casual stops on the crawl, the beach bar venues tend to do lobster kebabs and burgers alongside cold drinks.

July Weather on Ambergris Caye

July sits in the early part of Belize's wet season, but that does not mean what most visitors expect. On Ambergris Caye, rainfall tends to come in short afternoon bursts. Mornings are reliably clear, the sea is warm, and the trade winds from the east keep temperatures comfortable. Average daily temperatures run around 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The sea stays near 82 degrees. Pack light, breathable clothing, a light layer for evenings, and reef-safe sunscreen.
